“We had a homemade coop, but the hens stayed by the coop and made a mess. We wanted them to get out in the pasture and away from the coop. Our first mobile chicken house worked so well that we ended up buying a 2nd one. We love the automation and low maintenance. The first house was really user-friendly, so it was a no-brainer to buy the second one!”

We include several design factors to help make cleaner hens and eggs, including...

  • The rollaway nests move the eggs away from the hens as soon as they are laid.
  • The floor is a mesh that allows the manure and dirt to drop through.  This keeps the house and hens cleaner.
  • There is a 2" gap between the flooring and the actual nests.  This prevents manure and dirt from building up at the nests or inside the nests.

The simple answer is that it is usually cheaper to build a chicken coop than it is to buy a chicken coop - especially a chicken coop on wheels.

However, this does not cover all the nuances of the issue.

First of all, a homemade chicken coop will not be as high of quality as a modern chicken coop. So, make sure to consider if you are willing to sacrifice quality.

Also remember that building your own chicken coop takes time - something many people don't factor into cost. So while you may not be paying someone else to do the job, you are using your own time which otherwise could be used to make money.

And finally, remember that many commercial mobile chicken coops are designed specifically to save you time and money. So, while cost upfront is less to build your own, buying a quality portable chicken coop could save you time and money over the long run.

Opinions vary about how much space each chicken should have in a chicken coop or chicken run.

The truth is that the answer varies based on the circumstances.

If your chickens are confined to the coop or run all day, we recommend giving each chicken at least 8 square feet to move and roam around.

However, if your chickens are on pasture most of the day and only return to the coop to roost (like the mobile chicken house) the coop doesn't need to be as spacious.

When roosting, each chicken should have at least 8-12 inches of space.

It is most ideal for chicken coops to be built in the shade. Remember, chickens are basically little down jackets so they struggle with heat much more than they do with cold.

Also, if you have a moveable chicken coop you don't have to worry about where you build the coop. Simply move the coop to ideal pasture conditions each day!

A chicken can stay in its coop all day, but it is not ideal circumstances and they will not be healthy and thriving in such circumstances. We certainly do not recommend leaving a chicken in its coop for days on end.

Also, remember that if your chickens do remain in their coop for a day it is imperative that they have food, water, and the proper lighting. Otherwise, this is a very poor condition for them.

We would recommend building a coop that is at least 160 square feet to house 20 hens.

We recommend giving each hen at least 8 square feet of room. In this case that would come out to 96 square feet for the pen.

A common size for that square footage would be an 8 foot by 12 foot coop.

Building a chicken coop can vary greatly based on the materials you may already have access to and the type of materials you use on the coop.

It can also depend on the type of chicken coop you build. For example, a moveable chicken coops would require some kind of wheels or way to move the coop.

And finally, the features you decide to include also effect the cost of the coop. For example, including an automatic feeding system, solar power, and automatic lights and doors drives the price of a chicken coop upward.

However as a base price, the cheapest chicken houses usually cost around $35 per per square foot to build.
